When was the Faculty Association formed?

The Faculty Association was formed in 1976, after the legislature passed the Educational Employment Relations Act (EERA), which established collective bargaining for the California community colleges. In 1978, the faculty of the college voted to make the Association the exclusive representative of all college faculty in the arena of collective bargaining.

Dennis Frisch, Jo Kidd and Tom Peters attended the Protest Rally for Education at Cypress College on Wednesday, July 20th at 2:00pm.

There was about 50 students and a few faculty members from Cypress College, including the organizer and sponsor of the initiative, Peter Mathews. Peter passed around the bullhorn to Dennis, Jo and Tom to explain to the crowd who they were and why they came to the event. Josh, our new student trustee came around 3:00 and was also handed the bullhorn to entice cars and trucks to honk their horns. It was a lively group and the vehicles passing by were very supportive.

Peter spoke into the bullhorn explaining the petition/initiative he is sponsoring that will tax oil companies for extracting oil in the state, similar to taxes in Alaska and Texas. The tax would raise $2 to $3 billion for California schools, 48% for Community colleges in particular. Tom spoke personally with Peter and found out at present they only have about 10,000 signatures. Peter stated that they would have to push hard when school starts in the fall and will use paid petitioners if necessary.

It was nice talking to some of the students and hear their enthusiastic attitude toward the initiative and its potential benefit to California schools.
