Communicating With The Masses (December 2010) |

The Faculty Association recently approved updated bylaws with some really great changes. One change I find especially significant is the change of the Website committee (really just a glorified webmaster position) to a Public Relations committee.
The role of the Public Relations Director goes beyond updating the website (although that’s certainly an important aspect of the job). The PR Director is charged with “communicating with the membership, the community, and other interested parties to promote the organization’s projects and activities.” This is certainly a task not to be taken lightly.
As the FA’s first ever Public Relations Director, I’ve taken it upon myself to be sure to live up to the position’s ambitions. Ideas are now collected from various sources, and more than just one person makes PR decisions. In addition, here are some things we’ve recently done to help us achieve the FA’s PR objectives:
• Updated our online presence to include a useful website with constantly updated information about our activities and relevant resources.
• Added social media into the mix: tweeting and blogging are now common activities we use to communicate with the outside world.
• Began recording FA workshops and guest speakers, and making those video and audio clips available to you on our website. And here are some things we’re currently working on:
• Launching an e-mail communication system to communicate with current and past faculty outside of the main SMC e-mail system.
• Launching a campaign to involve students in the fight against budget cuts, including the use of postcards, ads in the Corsair, and personal meetings with student leaders. The result of these efforts is increased and better communication with members, as well as a better connection to our students and our community. In the end, the expected outcome is, of course, to help the FA to meet its objectives in providing the best working conditions possible for all faculty.
