March 2009, Volume 23, Issue 1 - Second Ever Part-Time Party is a Smash Success! PDF Print E-mail

The second ever part-time party took place on Friday May 4, at the home of Becky Curtis, Co-chair of the Faculty Association Part-time Commit-tee. A great time was had by all. The food was fabulous: sushi, shrimp cocktail, hot baked ziti, sandwiches, salads, vegetables, fruit, and of course a big chocolate cake saying ―Welcome Part-timers.‖ Lantz Simpson, JT Curtis, and Becky Curtis performed an impromptu jam session: per-forming some Janis, some Neil, and some Aretha (with Kathy Sucher on background vocals) and don’t forget “Layla.” Very special thanks to Launa Nelson and Sandra Powazek for all their help, and thanks to all the kitchen helpers, Mitra Moassessi, Kathy Sucher, Vicki Blaho, Melissa Michelson, and Lantz Simpson.

President Lantz Simpson announced the launch of the first ever Faculty Association Part-time Handbook for SMC, created by the FA Part-time Committee. The handbook is being distributed to your department chairs, so contact your department for a copy. Some have been distributed to your boxes. We will be up-dating the Handbook for in-coming part-timers in the Fall of 2007. The handbook is also available on-line on the FA SMC website: www.smcfa.org.

Here are a few comments from party goers:

Dyana Valentine, Counseling: “Thank you so much for hosting the part-time party. I met some very interesting peers! I really appreciate the handbook too -- I wish I’d had it four months ago. Best.”

Stephanie Donon, Graphic Design: “Thanks for the party. It was really nice to meet and talk with other part-timers. I met a lot of nice people. The food was great. And you have a beautiful home. I learned so much and I hope to be more tuned in to what CPFA (California Part-time Faculty Association) is doing.”

Robert Cannon: “I had a great time at the party. Thanks for your efforts and for inviting me.”

Charlotte Holtzermann, Life Science: “Thank you for arranging and hosting the SMC part-time party. I enjoyed the drive up to your house, meeting some very interesting people, and get-ting a feel for the diverse faculty at SMC. And thank you for the handbook -- it’s great.”

Steven Zucker, English: “Another wonderful party. You are such a generous, gracious hostess, seen replacing and replenishing all the goodies.”

Tommy Tong, English: “Thanks so much for hosting a wonderful party. I had a lot of fun and enjoyed meeting everyone. The music was awe-some. Rock on!”

Robbin Jeffries, Sociology: “Thanks for the party and the opportunity to meet some great new people.”

So many people came, and commented on how they loved the party, we will just have to do it again: Thanks to Wendi Brown, Art History; Claudio Egalon, Physical Sciences; Elham Gheytanchi, Social Science; Vicki Blaho, Melissa Michelson, ESL; Jolia Einstein, Eng-lish; Maria Barrio de Mendoza, Modern Lan-guage; Felice Farber, Social Science; Christo-pher Davis, History; Marci Spiegler, Life Sci-ences; Rosalyn Kahn, Communication; Richard Mednick, Business; Jesse Teplitzky, Head Men’s Basketball Coach; Saundra Woodruff, English; Joan Hackeling and Meredith Leo-nard, Earth Science; Cezar Galvez, Physical Sci-ences; Karen Perkins, Life Sciences; Michael Strathearn, Physical Science; Dyana Valentine, Counseling; Margarita Talleda, Education; An-drea Spector, ESL; Mary Pillot, Emeritus; Laura Guild, Psychology; Marsha Cooper, Emeritus; Grace Chee, History: Kathy Sucher, FA Secretary; Mitra Moassessi, FA Chief Negotiator; Lantz Simpson, FA President; Steven Kaufman, Sandra Powazek, Launa Nelson, Becky Curtis, and so many more.
