Current Poll Question

What is your biggest concern as an SMC faculty member?

Ask the Prez

Do part-time faculty have a retirement plan?

Yes. Pursuant to federal law, part-time faculty have three choices. Upon employment, they are automatically entered into a defined contribution plan administered by MetLife. Part-time faculty have the option of joining STRSDB (State Teachers Retirement System), a defined benefit plan, or STRS Cash Balance. Part-time faculty cannot simultaneously belong to all three plans. Please contact MetLife or STRS for plan details.

September, 2003 Volume 18, Issue 1 - What Happened to the PT Equity Fund? PDF Print E-mail
By Mitra Moassessi

This year SMC received $1.12 million from the Part-time Equity Fund, money legislatively allocated by the state for the sole purpose of correcting the inequities between part-time and full-time salary schedules.

At the beginning of academic year 02-03, the FA and the District agreed on part-time faculty salary schedules designed to distribute the equity fund based on the number of part-time faculty at that time.

Since then, 180 PTers lost their jobs in the spring cutback of classes – yet the mid-year budget cut did not change the amount of equity fund that SMC has received for 02-03 academic year. Thus fewer teachers should have been sharing the same amount of money originally calculated to be distributed over a greater number.

You don’t have to be a math teacher to realize something is wrong here. Yet -- despite many requests from FA -- the District has not been able to calculate, much less distribute the extra money owed to our PT faculty.
