Ask the Prez

When was the Faculty Association formed?

The Faculty Association was formed in 1976, after the legislature passed the Educational Employment Relations Act (EERA), which established collective bargaining for the California community colleges. In 1978, the faculty of the college voted to make the Association the exclusive representative of all college faculty in the arena of collective bargaining.

October 2009 - Welcome to a New Academic Year PDF Print E-mail
By Mitra Moassessi

Welcome to the 2009-10 academic year. It is both an enormous challenge and a great honor for me to start the new academic year as your new Faculty Association president.

It is my honor to start my term with a team of dedicated and hard working partners: Vice President Sandi Burnett, Chief Negotiator Howard Stahl, Secretary Becky Curtis, Treasurer Mario Martinez, and all the members of our Executive Committee and Representative Assembly. In order for our Faculty Association to be effective, we will all work hard and with dedication. I am confident that, with the help of these individuals, we will have a successful year.

I would also like to use this opportunity to thank Lantz Simpson, our outgoing president. Lantz served as our union president for nine years. Under his leadership, we as faculty of Santa Monica College made enormous advances, and we all owe him a great deal of gratitude. Lantz, I salute you and thank you for being a great advocate for the faculty’s rights. I would also like to thank our outgoing Executive Committee and Representative Assembly members; it was with their support that our union has become as strong as it is.

We are very fortunate to work for what is, in my opinion, the best community college in the state of California. Santa Monica College can claim this status because of its outstanding faculty. I am honored to have your confidence, and as your new Faculty Association President you have my promise that I will be a tireless advocate for faculty’s rights, and I will always work toward making advances in every possible aspect of our working conditions.

The present economic downturn and state funding issues have (and will continue to) result in a difficult and challenging time for all of us. It is in these times that faculty should be a central part of decision making, and we must take lead in defining the future of our college. Our Faculty Association is as strong as the faculty that supports it, and it is with that support that we can move forward and overcome the challenges ahead of us. Welcome to the new academic year!
