October 2009 - Chief Negotiator Report |

|
By Howard Stahl With the beginning of the academic year 2009-2010 upon us, we have entered the last year of our three-year collective bargaining agreement. In this final year of our contract, a number of new provisions have gone into effect. I would like to use this portion of the Bulletin to report on these new provisions. If you have questions or comments on any of these items, please feel free to contact one of your Faculty Association officers.
Salary
Salary Schedule A-1 and all of the schedules connected to it (including A-4 for Chairs, A-5 for Coordinators and B-2 for Load-Factor-1 Part-Time Faculty) have been revised to incorporate a “double step” movement for those faculty on or above step 8. In addition, every cell on steps 8 and higher was further increased by $330. These new salary schedules have been posted at our website for your reference. If you are uncertain about your step or column placement, please contact HR for further information.
Part-Time Office Hours
Beginning in Fall, 2009, Load-Factor-1 Part-Time Faculty will be paid at a parity rate of 81.25%. Incorporated into this new rate is the obligation for these faculty to perform 10 minutes of office hours for every unit of their assignment. Thus, Load-Factor-1 Part-Time Faculty teaching 6 units will need to perform 60 minutes of office hours; those teaching 9 units will need to perform 90 minutes of office hours; and so forth. Office hours are only required of faculty during Fall and Spring semesters, not Summer or Winter intersession. As a result, the parity rate for Load-Factor-1 Part-Time Faculty will be 75% during Winter and Summer intersessions when faculty perform no office hours. These new salary schedules have been posted at our website for your reference. If you are uncertain about your step or column placement, please contact HR for further information.
In order to accommodate this change described above, Load-Factor-1 Part-Time Faculty paychecks will look different as well. In the past, office hours were paid on a separate line item on your paychecks. Now, office hours will be combined in with your teaching pay, so only one line item will appear on your paychecks. The Faculty Association will be verifying the new paychecks to ensure payroll has been processed correctly.
