What is agency shop and why is there one at Santa Monica College?

Under the EERA, the Association has the Duty of Fair Representation of all faculty at the college. In 1994, the faculty voted to create an agency shop, which means that all faculty represented by the Association must pay a fair share to support the Association.

Your participation is required to guarantee continuation of our current level of health insurance coverage. All SMC employees and retirees should review the website http://www.smc.edu/collegebenefits/ and COMPLETE THE SURVEY found there. The Collegewide Benefits Committee will be recommending future coverage at the end of May. We must have your opinions to ensure the correct direction.

Participation using Internet access is preferable but printed copies of the website are posted throughout the District in employee areas. Printed copies of the survey are available from the College Health Office on Main campus. Please help us get this message out to all employees.
