Faculty will participate in the process.

By Lantz Simpson

The SMC Board of Trustees selected the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) to assist the trustees and the college community in the search for a new president of Santa Monica College.  ACCT was chosen at a special board meeting on April 18 after the trustees and the public heard presentations from ACCT and two other consultants, Community College Search Services and Korn/Ferry International.  The consensus among faculty attending the meeting was that ACCT’s Dr. Abel Sykes made by far the best presentation.  The trustees concurred in their vote.

Trustee Carole Currey, current Chair of the Board, has invited the Faculty Association and the Academic Senate to agree on three faculty members to serve on the presidential search committee.  Those faculty being recommended to the trustees to serve on the search committee are Lesley Kawaguchi, Richard Tahvildaran-Jesswein, and Lantz Simpson.  On May 24 faculty will meet with Dr. Sykes to discuss what the faculty are looking for in a new college president.  Dr. Sykes will be meeting separately with each college constituency—students, faculty, classified staff, and administration.

Dr. Sykes recommended that the search committee consist of fourteen members who represent various college constituencies.  The suggested representation on the committee would be as follows: faculty- three members; classified staff- three; students- two; community- two; administration- two; and trustees- two.  The 1995 search committee which resulted in the hiring of Dr. Piedad Robertson was much larger (24 members), but did not have any trustees on the committee.  At his board presentation, Dr. Sykes presented a time line for the search which culminated in interviews of finalists and the selection of a new president by the trustees this coming October-November.  The goal is to have a new president in place by January 1, 2006.
