What is your biggest concern as an SMC faculty member?

Ask the Prez

Who conducts the negotiations for the Faculty Association?

The Negotiating Council, under the leadership of the Chief Negotiator, has the responsibility of conducting negotiations with the District. A three-member Negotiating Team, led by the Chief Negotiator, meets with District negotiators to reach agreement on a new contract, and reports back to the Council for its advice and consent. The Council, in turn, reports to the membership. All new contracts must be ratified by a vote of the Association membership.

December 2004, Volume 15, Issue 3 - Holiday Party a Success PDF Print E-mail
By Andrew Walzer

Wow!  What a party!  What a night! (I’m still recovering as I write this article.)

The Faculty Association had its First Annual Holiday Party this last weekend, and boy, was it a shindig!   Lots of food, lots of wine, a spirited set of champagne toasts, and the wonderfully decorated house of counseling faculty Suzanne McDonald, all made for a wonderful set of ingredients.  Yes, folks, we had lots to celebrate, and celebrate we did!

With a crowd of over seventy people, our president, Lantz Simpson, gave an eloquent toast to the victory of the two newly elected board of trustees’ members, who were in attendance. (We had a third board of trustee member in attendance as well.)   We also celebrated a new year full of hope and promise, as well as our rich and varied community here at Santa Monica College.  A lot of people put a lot of effort into making this college the institution that it is, and its time that we acknowledge and celebrate our community.

Some people accuse me of being too much into partying (“Andrew Walzer, that party animal,” they mutter under their breath), but I believe really strongly that we need to come together and celebrate our community and nurture our ties with one another.  That is what a learning community is.   So I’d like to see more parties, more celebrating, and more appreciation of the many and varied contributions that go into making Santa Monica College the fine institution that it is.
