The Chancellor’s office has penalized SMC for not hiring enough new full-time faculty in 2002-03. Last year SMC hired only enough new full-time faculty to replace those who had left the college. Title V regulations require that SMC hire a prescribed number of new full-time faculty each year based upon the previous year’s growth. However, a few districts complained last year to the Chancellor that state budget problems were causing a hardship on local district budgets. Districts sought relief from the Title V hiring requirements and apparently thought a deal had been worked out and approved by the Board of Governors. SMC proceeded on the assumption that the college would not be required to make the new hires in Fall 2002 and so the new hires were not made.
New officials in the Chancellor’s office penalized the college anyway over the summer. The college was fined $55,026 per hire for the 7.9 hires it failed to make, for a total of $434,705. VP Tom Donner told the Budget Committee that it was all a mistake and that it would be corrected. Teresa Tena of the Chancellor’s office has personally assured SMC faculty leaders that this mistake will be corrected.
SMC is not hiring any new full-time faculty this fall. Tom Donner has told the Budget Committee that a deal has been worked out for this year also.
Let’s hope all the mistakes will eventually be corrected and that the new hires will be made as soon as possible.
