What is agency shop and why is there one at Santa Monica College?

Under the EERA, the Association has the Duty of Fair Representation of all faculty at the college. In 1994, the faculty voted to create an agency shop, which means that all faculty represented by the Association must pay a fair share to support the Association.

Teri Bernstein, the hard working former SMCFA Chief Negotiator and former president, who with then SMCFA president Fran Chandler hammered away at the community college districts for violating the 50 percent law, was awarded the John Vasconcellos Award for her outstanding work on behalf of community college faculty at the annual FACCC conference in Anaheim. This marks the second year in a row that faculty members from Santa Monica College have received a major FACCC award, and the second time a faculty member from the Business department has been a recipient. Fran Chandler received the Faculty Member of the Year award last year. Also receiving the prestigious honor was Zoe Close, CCCI president and chief negotiator from Grossmont Community College.

Robert Flores, current SMCFA Chief Negotiator presented the award to Teri, noting that there will be many who will never know her name but will forever benefit from her hard work. We salute you TERI BERNSTEIN!
