The first major effort to become involved in the Board of Trustees election netted mixed results. While FA-endorsed candidate Margaret Quinones managed to secure a seat on the board, attorney and judge Robert Klepa did not. The two incumbents, Patrick Nichelson and Annette Shamey were reelected. Another new member of the Board is Anne Bird, the student trustee. Quinones, Nichelson and Shamey were also endorsed by Santa Monica Renters' Rights (SMRR), and with that backing were able to ring in a large number of voters. Klepa on the other hand ran independent of a SMRR endorsement on a ticket that included Patrick McGuire, and encountered a barrage of last minute false allegations regarding his party affiliation and residency. McGuire also faced numerous unsubstantiated claims. The smear campaign in which both were victims was probably unnecessary given Klepa's and McGuire's failure to secure SMRR endorsements. Nevertheless, the composition of the board has been slightly altered.
