Current Poll Question

What is your biggest concern as an SMC faculty member?

Ask the Prez

Do part-time faculty have a retirement plan?

Yes. Pursuant to federal law, part-time faculty have three choices. Upon employment, they are automatically entered into a defined contribution plan administered by MetLife. Part-time faculty have the option of joining STRSDB (State Teachers Retirement System), a defined benefit plan, or STRS Cash Balance. Part-time faculty cannot simultaneously belong to all three plans. Please contact MetLife or STRS for plan details.

September 2000, Volume 11, Issue 1 - Kudos to Fran and Teri: Association Stronger than Ever PDF Print E-mail
By Lantz Simpson

If the Faculty Association awarded medals for performance above and beyond the call of duty, then outgoing President Fran Chandler and outgoing Chief Negotiator Teri Bernstein would be the first two recipients. The hours (thousands), the energy (boundless), the determination (resolute), and the expertise (profound) that Fran and Teri have brought to the Faculty Association over the last few years can not be measured.

The last few years have been tough: the contract dispute that dragged on through impasse, mediation, factfinding, picketing, facilitation, and finally, resulted in a landmark agreement; the battle over enforcement of the 50% rule, from court rooms to the Chancellor's office; the unfair labor practice charges and trial which led to the District's admission of guilt on two charges. Lesser personalities would have wilted, but not Fran and Teri. Most importantly, the legacy of leadership is that the Faculty Association in 2000 is stronger than it has ever been, and is positioned to become even stronger.

For all that and more, from me and everyone in the Faculty Association, thanks Fran and Teri!
