What is your biggest concern as an SMC faculty member?

Ask the Prez

What is agency shop and why is there one at Santa Monica College?

Under the EERA, the Association has the Duty of Fair Representation of all faculty at the college. In 1994, the faculty voted to create an agency shop, which means that all faculty represented by the Association must pay a fair share to support the Association.

August, 2000 Vol 15, Issue 1 - Part-timers to Meet Under Tree PDF Print E-mail
by Gloria Heller

To kick off the Fall 2000 semester, the Faculty Association is holding a series of three Hourly Committee meetings.

Hourly Committee Meeting Times

2:30 p.m., Tuesday, September 5 (tree)

1:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 6 (tree)

5:30 p.m., Wednesday, September 6 (FA Office)

We will meet on Tuesday, September 5, at 2:30 p.m.and on Wednesday, September 6 at 1:00 p.m. in the grassy quandrangle by the clock tower. We will meet near the jacaranda tree planted in tribute to Jim Prickett, the first part-timer elected as President of the SMC Faculty Association. The nearby blue bench was dedicated to him during last spring's Part-time Faculty Week (known as A2K). Also on Wednesday we will meet in the Faculty Association Office, Liberal Arts Building, Room 140, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. (with munchies).

Each meeting will include an update by Faculty Association President Lantz Simpson. Also, the Co-Chairs of the Hourly Committee, Ben Martin and I, will introduce ourselves, and there will be an open question-and-answer period. We want to hear your concerns. That's what we're here for. We will update you on issues affecting part-time faculty at SMC.
