At the yearly Classified Employee Luncheon on May 16, 1998, Faculty Association President Fran Chandler presented CSEA Treasurer Steve Levine (accepting for CSEA President Ray Martin) and Classified Senate President Tony Prestby two finely rendered, articulated artists' models of hands. Chandler presented the hands as a symbolic gesture before an audience of approximately 200 classified employees, administrators, and managers. Expressing appreciation to the classified staff of SMC "who enable us to do what we love to do most: teach," Chandler also read the following resolution passed unanimously by the Representative Assembly on May 14: WHEREAS the classified employees of Santa Monica College work hand in hand with faculty in providing the best education possible for students; and WHEREAS the classified staff have always extended a hand in support of critical faculty issues; THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Faculty Association hereby gives an enthusiastic hand in support of our classifed colleagues and in profound gratitude for all they do.
