IV. President’s Report-Mitra Moassessi

Mitra reported on the PPIC (Public Policy Institute of California) on Educating California-Choices for the Future.  The report is posted on the on the FA Website

http://www.smcfa.org/index.php/documents/46-resources/1200-educating-california-report-on-education

Some highlights: “By the year 2025, 41% of jobs will require at least a bachelor’s degree, but only 35% of California adults will have college diplomas.  It is estimated there will be a shortfall of one million college graduates. From 2005 to 2025, about three million college graduates in California will leave the workforce.  In California, 35% of 55 to 59 year olds are college graduates, compared to only 26% of 25 to 29 year olds.

California lags behind many other large states and is below the national average in per student expenditures. The California Department of Education Estimates that between now and 2025, 24% of students will drop out of high school. Reductions in funding currently planned for the state’s school and colleges are not in the state’s long-term best interests.  Shortchanging education for quick budget fixes is a short-sighted approach that could seriously undermine California’s economic future.”

Howard Stahl, Chief Negotiator, reported on a MOU for the Full Time Athletic Team Coach -- to renew the contract for Project Manager for the Men’s Basketball Program for the 2009-2010 academic year (July 1, 2009-June 30, 2010). It was reported that in 1980 there were 21 full-time coaches and today there are only two. This item will be on the agenda for the next Representative Assembly meeting.

Respectfully Submitted,
