Motion from the Nominations and Elections Committee

The motion was seconded by Carol Beckstead and passed unanimously.
IV. Negotiating Council Report-Robert Flores
Robert Flores reported that the council is positive and optimistic concerning the progress of negotiations. He suggested that if faculty would like to follow the course of negotiation they should study the contract item by item in order, which is the course the team is following. The hope is that negotiations will be completed by August 20, 2001. Subcommittees are being formed on various topics of concern in the contract and faculty members ore encouraged to join committees in their areas of interest.
A 5.17% raise should have been reflected in faculty members’ February, 2001 checks.
V. FACCC Lobby Day Report-Ken Mason
Ken Mason reported that this Lobby Day was considered by many to be the most successful ever. SMC faculty members were able to speak with State Senator Sheila Kuehl’s staff, with State Representative Fran Pavley where they were warmly received. Speakers to the community college visitors discussed several bills, Jackie Goldberg’s (D-Los Angeles) AB907, Jerome Horton’s (D-Inglewood), AB 647, the so-called Whistleblower’s Protection Act among others. Please read the April issue of the Faculty Association Bulletin for more complete information.
The Legislative Affairs committee urges members to look forward to the 2002 elections by making a monthly donation to the Faculty Association Political Action Committee.
The Interfaith Demonstration for a Living Wage will take place April 3, at 5:30 P.M. in front of Santa Monica City Hall.
The group then discussed some ideas for making contact with legislators more often such as field trips for legislators to campus, or faculty visits to legislators’ home offices on Friday afternoons. These would be possible plans for the PAC to implement.
VI. For the Good of the Order
A. Gloria Heller encouraged members to join the CPFA (California Part-time Faculty Association) and as an incentive distributed great looking CPFA pins to those of us who are already members.
B. Fran moved and Denise Cavener seconded the motion to nominate Lantz Simpson FACCC’s Part-time Faculty Member of the Year award. The motion passed unanimously.
Respectfully submitted,
Ann Maddox
