Current Poll Question

What is your biggest concern as an SMC faculty member?

Ask the Prez

Do part-time faculty have medical benefits?

After working three of the last six semesters at five hours per week or more, part-time faculty may choose from one of the following: single party Kaiser medical, a dental plan, or a vision plan. The District pays the full cost of the plans.

•  Approval of Minutes – November 17, 2005 and December 8, 2005

M/S Mason/Goldstein. Minutes approved.

•  President's Report (1) Jeremy Goulard, FACCC Membership Director made a short presentation. FACCC is looking for someone to run for FACCC Board Region C; full-timers only are eligible to run. The Education Institute is looking to grow and is soliciting suggestions for workshops. (2) FACCC Lobby Day is Monday, March 6, 2006 ; it's important that FACCC have a large group walking the halls of the Capitol. (3) DPAC recommended re-hiring to fill all vacancies created by retiring faculty.

•  Motion from the Executive Committee – Amendment to FACCC Contract MOTION: The Executive Committee recommends that the Representative Assembly support the following amendments to the original contract: (1) the contract will be renewed on a year-to-year basis; (2) the contract will be with FACCC's Educational Institute; and (3) every five years the FACCC E.I. shall reimburse the SMCFA five percent of the median annual dues collected by the FACCC E.I. from the SMCFA over the previous five years. Otherwise, the contract will continue as it is written. Passed unanimously.

•  Motion from the Executive Committee – Community College Initiative MOTION: The Executive Committee recommends that the Representative Assembly support the California College initiative. Passed unanimously.

•  Motion from the Executive Committee –Initiative Contribution

MOTION: The Executive Committee recommends that the Representative Assembly authorize $2500 to be paid from the Faculty Association General Fund to CCCI to support the Community College Initiative. Passed unanimously.

•  Benefits Committee – Sandi Burnett

-Human Resources disseminated a printout detailing each faculty's benefit contributions. In the communication is a letter from Pat Brown asking faculty for a signature confirming that the information is correct. The letter does not include the information and queries that the Health Benefits committee asked to be included in the letter, so Sandi says we're in a quandary (she can't advise us about whether to sign the letter).

-March 2, at 11:15 am there is a workshop for faculty thinking about retiring. The workshop will discuss benefits.

-The Benefits Committee is working on a timeline to issue an R.F.P. (request for proposals) in order to see if we can find another company that can offer us benefits equivalent to what we currently have.

•  Negotiating Report – Mitra Moassessi

- Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) regarding Field Study Class Compensation (see attached.)

-M/S: McBride/Frisch: The Representative Assembly approves the MOU as presented. Passed unanimously.

-Mitra reported no progress on negotiations; she encouraged representatives to get ready and to get faculty ready for the next step, which would be a job action.

-The preliminary P-1 report is out and Mitra says it looks good.

•  For the Good of the Order

Respectfully Submitted,

Kathy Sucher

Recording Secretary
