The meeting was called to order at 11:15 A.M.
I. PresidentÕs Report-Lantz Simpson
A. Lantz reported that nine faculty members from SMC attended the recent FACCC conference in San Jose at the Fairmont Hotel. There were many excellent workshops including one presented by Teri Bernstein on the 50% law, a legislative panel , a budget panel,"Show Us the Money". A workshop on local PACÕs with Lantz Simpson and Mona Field was also on the program.
B.Fran Chandler received the award for FACCC full-time faculty member of the year. She was commended for her work in bringing about the close relationship betweeen SMCFA and FACCC and also for her part in bringing the 50% law violations to the attention of the legislature. Fran said that she sees her contribution as a member of a team. Teri Bernstein was runner-up for this award.
C. (Announced by Ken Mason)Lantz Simpson received the FACCC part-time faculty member of the year award with focus on his outstanding work for part-time equity, his unifying union philosophy, as well as his excellence as a teacher.
D. 50% lawsuit-The second mediation conference was held with representatives of the district on October 3, 2001, and a meeting of the 50% lawsuit committee has been called for advisement.
E. Campus Equity Week-During the week of October 29 on campuses all over the Uninted States and Canada activities will be held to highlight inequities in hiring, especially between part-time and full-time tenured faculty.
F. Lantz reported that he has assured the College Board of Trustees that the faculy Association will lend its support to the collegedrive for funding for long-term improvement of college facilities.
II. Negotiations Update-Robert Flores Negotiations are delicate but hopeful at the moment. The hope is that both the 50%lawsuit and the contract may be settled simultaneously. The report was short since confidentiality is of the essence.
III. For he Good of the order-Special commendations to Mitra Moassessifor her excellent work on the budget committee.
