Representative Assembly Meeting

September 7, 2006 .

I. President's Report - Lantz Simpson

Lantz tabled his report and moved directly to the Negotiations report.

 

II. Negotiations Report – Mitra Moassessi

Mitra reported on the salary agreement that was reached last night.

 

FA initial position

District initial position

3.5% August 06

4% bonus

3.5% Spring 06

1% Fall 06

3% bonus on 05-06 salary

Contract runs from 04-07

•  The Negotiating Team negotiated for the Association, with Barbara Baird and Fran Manion as observers.

•  Dr. Tsang, Jeff Shimizu Brenda Benson, Randy Lawson negotiated for the District, with Susan Aminoff and Herb Roney as observers for the District.

•  Mitra reviewed the other contract provisions and answered questions.

•  Right-size classes and the unfair labor practice filing were instrumental in getting the District to settle.

•  Mitra also outlined the next steps towards ratification of the contract. Faculty can expect to vote on the contract in the next few weeks.

•  Lantz said the faculty needs to assert itself in the realm of Enrollment Management practices and Enrollment Recovery now that the contract is settled.

 

III. Motion from the Executive Committee on Work To Contract

 

MOTION: The motion on Work to Contract should be tabled.

M/S: LaValle/Strathearn.

 

MOTION: The Faculty Association rescinds the right-sized classes motion immediately.

M/S: Manion/Moassessi.

 

 IV. Four motions from the Executive Committee regarding the Board of Trustees election to be presented at the meeting.

 

MOTION: The Executive Committee recommends that the Representative Assembly endorse four candidates in the November Board of Trustees election: Andrew Walzer, Nancy Greenstein, Louis Jaffe, and David Finkel.

Passed unanimously.

 

MOTION: The Executive Committee recommends that the Faculty Association agree to participate in the Education Coalition with the SMMUSD district teacher union and possibly endorse SMMUSD candidates.

Passed unanimously.

 

MOTION: The Executive Committee recommends that the Faculty Association contribute $15,000 to the “Friends of Santa Monica College” committee and urges individual faculty members to contribute as well.

Passed unanimously.

 

MOTION : The Executive Committee recommends that the Faculty Association contribute up to $65,000 to campaign efforts to elect our endorsed Board of Trustees candidates.

Passed unanimously.

 

V. Approval of Compton MOUs

MOTION : The Compton MOUs should be approved as presented.

M/S: Goldstein/Zehr.

Passed unanimously.

 

VI. For the Good of the Order

  • Faculty Association members and guests introduced themselves at today's meeting, the first meeting of the year.

  • Martin Goldstein invited all faculty to the October 7 th SMCFA-PAC fundraiser.

  • Richard Tahvildaran invited all faculty to the Walzer fundraiser on Sept 17 th .

  • Becky Curtis announced the Part-time Committee meeting on Sept14th at 11:15 am at the Bread Factory.
