I. President's Report - Lantz Simpson

(A) CALPIRG New Voters Project Sam Voorhees encouraged Assembly members and all faculty to support “Voter Participation Week”, Oct 17-23 rd . Oct.23 rd is the last day to register. Many Assembly members pledged to support the effort and took forms.

Ways faculty can support the effort include:

  • Registering students to vote in your classroom. Drop forms off at the FA Office. Forms must be submitted within 3 days of being filled out.
  • Wearing a “VOTE” wristband or button.
  • Putting up a Register to Vote poster.

Sam can be reached at (802) 989-3170 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. (B) The contract was settled by a vote of membership: 441 For | 4 Against. The Board of Trustees will meet Oct. 9 th to approve the contract. At that point the contract will be put in force. For a calculation of the retroactive pay due to each faculty member, a downloadable Excel spreadsheet is available at http://www.smcfa.org

(C) Dennis Frisch spoke to the CCCI California Community College Initiative which has now entered the signature-gathering phase. SMC student groups will be helping gather signatures. Faculty are also being asked to collect a few signatures from colleagues, friends, neighbors, or other California voters. Dennis passed out petitions (and the 2 short “declarations” that any signature-gatherer must sign). Forms may also be downloaded here: http://www.californiansforcommunitycolleges.org/downloads/

Forms may be dropped off at the FA office or mailed in directly. Signatures must be gathered outside of class time.

The talking points for the initiative are:

Students

It will reduce student fees to $15 plus, a process will be put in place to prevent radical escalation of fees in the future.

Governance

It empowers the Chancellor's Office with more authority (instead of the legislature) while preserving local control.

Funding

It changes the “funding mechanism.” Instead of the Community Colleges splitting Prop 98 with K-12, it would establish separate funding from K-12

(D) Board of Trustees election. All candidates have been invited to speak to the Representative Assembly.

(E) FACCC Conference. All Representative Assembly members are invited to attend the FACCC Conference next week, Oct 12-14 in downtown L.A. The Faculty Association will pay registration for anyone who wants to attend.

(F) Lawsuit Settled. The lawsuit brought by our former political consultant Kelly Hayes-Raitt has been settled in favor of Hayes-Raitt. The FA has paid the $20,000 settlement.

(G) “Enrollment Recovery Effort”. Lantz is soliciting suggestions for the FTES enrollment recovery plan as it is agendized for the next DPAC meeting. Some of the provisions in the new contract that will help boost FTES include newly-defined Distance Ed. Class-sizes and now pay for mid-size oversized classes.

(H) Next DPAC Budget Committee Meeting . The college may be headed toward “stabilization”. The Compton FTES will be discussed.
