MOU - Full Time Athletic Team Coach - November 16, 2009 PDF Print E-mail

MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING
Full Time Athletic Team Coach
November 16, 2009

The District and the Faculty Association agree to the following memorandum of understanding concerning the hiring of a full time athletic team coach:

Proposal
The District and Faculty Association agree to approve extending the employment of a Project Manager for the Men’s Basketball Program for the 2009-2010 academic year (July 1, 2009-June 30, 2010).

Background
Santa Monica College is committed to providing a high level of instruction and supervision to the student athletes participating in the intercollegiate programs. The District and Faculty Association recognize that the number of full time athletic coaches has significantly declined over the years. Parties are in agreement to support the hiring of the Men’s Basketball coach as a temporary academic manager in the Project Manager category as an experiment for one academic year. Parties agree to evaluate this model during the Spring 2010 semester to determine extension or termination.

Duties and Responsibilities
Position reports to the Director of Athletics, supervises all operations related to the College’s Men’s Basketball program, and performs all job-related activities as assigned by the Director of Athletics (see job description for additional responsibilities). This position will only supervise assistant coaches assigned to the Men’s Basketball program.    The evaluation of this employee shall be completed at the end of the basketball season and may include the written comments submitted by full-time faculty coaches.

Qualifications
Master’s Degree in health, Physical Education, Sports Administration or a related discipline. Demonstrated successful coaching experience at the high school and/or collegiate levels. Application must meet minimum qualifications to teach related varsity team classes.

Non-precedent setting
This Memorandum of Understanding shall be non-precedent setting. Coaching remains a faculty activity.
