What is your biggest concern as an SMC faculty member?

Who conducts the negotiations for the Faculty Association?

The Negotiating Council, under the leadership of the Chief Negotiator, has the responsibility of conducting negotiations with the District. A three-member Negotiating Team, led by the Chief Negotiator, meets with District negotiators to reach agreement on a new contract, and reports back to the Council for its advice and consent. The Council, in turn, reports to the membership. All new contracts must be ratified by a vote of the Association membership.

CALENDAR

11.1 A joint Administration/Faculty Association Committee shall be composed of three members from each group and shall meet and attempt to agree on a calendar for the 1996-1997 college year complying with all requirements of AB 1725 and Title 5. The committee is to consider input from the classified staff in arriving at its recommendations. These recommendations shall be made to both the administration and the Association.

If the committee does not agree on a 1996-97 calendar by February 23, 1996, the administration shall create a 1996-97 calendar as close in structure as possible to the 1995-96 calendar.

11.2 The 1995-96 calendar agreement includes the following:

  •
      Summer session . . . . June 19-August 11
      Fall semester . . . . August 21-December 19
      Winter session . . . . January 2-February 8
      Spring semester . . . . February 12-June 11

c.1 The nine (9) flex days will include three (3) institutional days, two (2) departmental days, and four (4) individual days. The content of flex days is not subject to grievance.

c.2 a. Monitoring content of individual flex days shall be the responsibility of the department chairs. Appeal of a decision by a chair will be to the appropriate academic administrator.

c.2 b. Monitoring content of institutional and departmental flex days shall be the responsibility of the Professional Development Committee of the Academic Senate.

  • a. The calendar shall comply with all requirements of AB 1725 and Title 5.

    b. The calendar will consist of the following:

    c. A flex calendar will be established using nine (9) days for flex. All faculty, (teaching and non-teaching), will participate in flex days. For hourly faculty, the number of flex days will be prorated. Hourly faculty will be encouraged but not required to fulfill their flex days through the institutional and departmental days rather than individual days.

    d. The calendar will be compressed so that the normal load will be compressed into 156 days of teaching in addition to the nine flex days. In order to meet the STRS requirement of 175 days of contract for all faculty, five (5) Saturdays in each semester shall be designated as work days for faculty on the compressed calendar.
